Measure it the way we do

Three numbers decide the space. Measure with the vehicle hitched the way you’ll store it.

1. Length, end to end

For a boat, measure from the back of the outboard or swim platform to the tip of the trailer coupler, not the hull length on the brochure. That usually adds 2½′ to 3½′. For an RV, measure from the rear bumper, or the rack if one hangs off the back, to whatever sticks out farthest at the front. On a travel trailer, that’s the tip of the coupler. On a fifth wheel, it’s the front cap, not the kingpin under it. A motorhome runs bumper to bumper.

2. Width at the widest point

Boats: the beam, or the trailer fenders if they stick out wider. RVs: body width, plus mirrors that don’t fold.

3. Height, if you want indoor

Ground to the highest point: tower, roof AC, antenna, or rack. Indoor RV and boat storage at RV Storage Depot – Norwalk and RV Storage Depot – Altamonte Springs has a 14′ door; your vehicle must be 13′ or lower. RV Storage Depot – McClellan Park has no indoor height limit.

Add 3′ to the length for room to back in and close up. That’s the space to ask for.
